INTERVIEW: Author Kendra Kilbourn

You may have caught her on air with us not far back, but if not, then here is your chance to get to know a little bit about Kendra Kilbourn, breakout author. You can purchase her book 'Lovely Shadows' on Kindle and Nook. Her next book is in the works, to be released sometime in 2012 and here you can learn a little bit about her.

Let’s start out by you telling us a bit about why you started writing.

When I was four, my grandma handed me a pen and notebook and told me to shut up and write something because my constant chattering was giving her a migraine. Ever since then, I've rarely been without a pen and paper. Writing has always been something of an escape for me, a way to be a part of something outside of myself. Throughout school I took advance English classes and was on my high school's newspaper staff. Writing is a passion; it's a way of life for me.

As an author, you have to have influences in your life. Who are some of your favorite authors?

I don't really have a favorite author but I do have books that I just adore. My all-time favorite is The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. Holden' Caulfield's cynical and questioning view of the world just cuts through to the truths about life—that we all might be a little more screwed up than we're willing to admit.

Other books I love are the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr, and of course, the Harry Potter series by the amazing J.K. Rowling. I'd love to trade places with her!

You released your first book, ‘Lovely Shadows’, on Nook and Kindle. Tell us briefly what this book is about.

Lovely Shadows is about Jessa Grace who is haunted by the ghost of Aidan Summers. He needs her help to solve the mystery of his death before he can crossover. But things become complicated when they fall for each other: her boyfriend Levi Moore doesn't know about her paranormal activities.

Why do you think fans will like this book?

Anyone who loves intense love triangles will like Lovely Shadows. There's the constant question of “how do you know?” if someone is right for you or not. Plus, who doesn't love a good ghost story?

Are you writing a sequel to it?

At this time, no, I'm not working on a sequel. I've toyed with the idea but for now, my focus is on my upcoming novel Eternal Sun and its sequels. Maybe sometime in the future I'll revisit Jessa and Aidan but for now, it's not something I'm planning. There has been some demand for a sequel so we'll see what happens. I never say never!

You have been tweeting about your newest work-in-progress, Eternal Sun. Can you tell us anything about that?

Ah, I love this book! Eternal Sun and its sequels are my passion project. I started work on Eternal Sun over a year ago but took a break to write Lovely Shadows. I'm excited about getting Eternal Sun out to the public.

Eternal Sun is the story of Celeste Moon, who grew up believing her father abandoned her as a baby, only to discover he was a king of the mystical country Adelaide, and was murdered fifteen years ago. The people who killed her father now want her dead, as well. Under the care of the True Court Shields, she learns she's part of a race of humans who possess supernatural abilities and hers is the most dangerous one of all. To further complicate matters, she also learns she's magically bound to Tyson Beckwith and Jonas Rose, two Shields who constantly fight for her life and her love.

At its core, Eternal Sun is about following your destiny and discovering what really matters in life and love.

Do you have any idea when it might be released?

If Eternal Sun doesn't find a home with an agent or publishing house, then I plan to release it no later than June of 2012. If I do sign with an agent, it could be two years before Eternal Sun sees the light of day!

As an author, you have to have a million ideas running through your head all at once. How do you decide what to write about and what to tuck away for later?

I always have ideas running through my head. Sometimes it's difficult to keep track of all my thoughts. Earlier this year I created a “Future Writing Box.” Whenever I get an idea for a story, I write as much as I can down on an index card then store it in the box. If I get into a writing rut, I simply sort through the box until I find an idea that inspires me in that moment.

Why did you chose to go with Kindle and Nook compared to traditional publishing?

Honestly, I published to Kindle and Nook as a last resort. After receiving rejections from nearly twenty-five agents, I gave up the process and published independently. Looking back, there are moments were I think I should have stuck it out but publishing Lovely Shadows myself gave me great insight to the business. I'm constantly learning about marketing my work and myself. I'll continue to attempt the traditional route before publishing independently.

Where can fans find you online?

INTERVIEW: Kristin Richardson from Kristin Kay Photography

We recently got the chance to do a virtual sit down with Kristin Richardson, owner of Kristin Kay Photography, based out of Los Angeles. Check out what she had to say about her inspirations, favorite kinds of shoots, and her epic answer to our infamous jelly belly question.

Can you start off by telling us a little about how you got into Photography?

When I was 15 years old, I took a photography class where we learned how to process our own film and use the darkroom to develop our prints.  I found it fascinating.  Eventually, I became the teacher’s aide and found myself entering local competitions.  However, I discovered dance shortly after that and found I did not have the time to commit to both, and I chose dance.  I didn’t pick up a camera again, until I was on tour with Cher in 1999 and was inspired by the beautiful images all over Europe.  That is when I shot one of my favorite photos of bikes at a train station in Amsterdam.  But once I got off tour, I discovered the world of acting and put down the camera again.  And then just a few years ago, I decided to take some photography classes out here in Los Angeles, and it seems to have finally stuck.  But my biggest influences have been my high school teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Bolton, and my college professor, Mike Tsai, for sharing their knowledge and giving me their encouragement.

According to your website it says you specialize in documentary and journalistic photography. Can you briefly describe those for those who don’t know the difference?

Basically, I just enjoy trying to convey a story through my photographs.  I am not one to do a traditional portrait shoot.  I like hearing about what a subject has going on in their life and what they want to portray, and then we sit down and brainstorm on different ideas of how to do that.  My dream photo shoot would be to follow a subject around for a while and capture bits and pieces of their everyday life.  I call that documentary photography.  Currently, I often shoot a burlesque troop called Cherry Boom Boom out here in Los Angeles.  The work I do with them is documentary style in nature.  We show them from the dressing room transforming to the show up on stage in front of an audience.  Documentary photography can end up in galleries, coffee table books and magazines. Journalistic photographers do the same thing and are usually hired out by newspapers and magazines.  It would be a dream to work for a publication like National Geographic or Rolling Stone.  I am currently brainstorming ideas for a series of work that I hope to eventually show in a gallery.

What is it about photography that excites you?

My teacher in college taught me that to be a photographer, you are essentially a problem solver.  In every shoot there will most likely be an obstacle you must overcome.  And you have to think fast, remain calm and find a way to move forward.  And, I have to say, he was completely right.  So, I find I am never bored.  There is always more to discover and explore in the world of cameras, lighting, editing, etc.  It is a great feeling when someone sees a piece of your work and wants to hang it on their wall.  Or they relate to the image and the emotions.  I also enjoy directing my subjects, which I believe comes from my acting background.  But the best part is to watch people’s reactions when they see the captured image.  They don’t usually realize how interesting they are or how great they are doing, and it surprises them.  I really love that part.

Looking through your photos on your website, I noticed that you do a lot of action shots, instead of poses. Is there something you prefer about catching the perfect action moment in a single shot?

I love shooting movement, which I believe comes from my dance background.  I feel like it has given me the ability to understand the timing in capturing those great moments. In fact, I often find myself breathing with my subject.  I find those shoots to be great fun,

Many people may know that you are also an actress. Do you have a preference between acting or photography?

It would be like comparing apples to oranges.  Both are amazing art forms that come with struggles and rewards. They are freelance/self-employed careers that come with a lot of hustle and rejection.  But, the rewards when you do work are above and beyond amazing.

Where do you draw inspiration for your photo shoots? Is it something you see that triggers it, or do you constantly have new ideas popping into your head that you are looking for a backdrop for?

I am most inspired by my subjects.  I have also been inspired by other photographer’s images.

Now you are also a wife and mother on top of the acting and photography. Most know that your husband is also in the entertainment business. How do you juggle the business side of life, seems those two professions are very time consuming, and still balance time for the family? Every mother/wife wants to know your secret J.

That is a question in which I don’t think I will ever find the answer.  Can you really do it all?  I always say, “Hell, its worth a try.”  However, it does seem as though something always suffers a bit, and when you fix that thing, it trickles down to something else.  If your career is great and your husband and child are happy, then most likely, your house is a mess.  You clean your house, and you get behind on your work.  You catch up on your work, and your family feels neglected.  I think you can just do your best and know that, in the end, everything is going to be fine and everyone is going to live. It’s all good.  I am sure most people in the same situation would agree, the biggest pitfall, is neglecting your self.  It’s hard to remember to take care of you too.   I have to work on that one.

For someone wanting to hire you to do their pictures, is there a price guideline or does it just depend on what they want, the number of outfits, travel, etc?

It really depends on the type of job and what exactly is going to be required.  I have produced bigger shoots with assistants and catering down to simple headshots that have only taken an hour.  For me, the hardest part and biggest time commitment usually comes in the editing process.  So I can give a general idea, but the exact price is determined by what the job requires.

Taking a quick step away from the photography for a moment, are you still taking acting jobs as well or are you concentrating on the photography portion of your career right now? Can we expect to see you grace our televisions again sometime soon?

I loved my acting career and feel very lucky for all the opportunities I’ve received.  Due to certain circumstances in my life, I took a break from it for a while and am currently trying to figure out if it is something I want to pursue again.  The acting business gets harder and harder for women as they get older.  Unfortunately, that is just how the industry works.  Even though, I love the craft, I often get frustrated with the business side.

One of your supports/fans sent us over a question. This is from @SwayShay on twitter. What was the very first kind of camera you got and do you have a favorite subject to take photos of?

My first camera was a Pentax film 35mm.  I only had one lens for it, but I loved that camera.  Unfortunately, I lost it in a cab in Europe.  I am terrible at leaving things behind.  It’s been a lifelong curse.  Then my best friend bought me a Canon Rebel 35mm film camera that I still have.  I then moved onto digital and bought a Pentax K10D and a couple of lenses, which is what I used while going through school.  Now I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II.  I have a zoom lens and a wide angle and hope to get a 50mm fixed lens next.  This camera also shoots amazing video, which I hope to utilize in the future.  I would love to shoot a short film with it some day.  But, I have to emphasize to @SwayShay and everyone who is interested in photography to always remember, its not the camera which makes a great photo, it’s the eye behind it.

This will be our last question and is one we are known for asking all of our guests. It’s a bit goofy, but it’s fun to hear what people come up with. So here it goes! If you could be any flavor jelly belly, what flavor would it be and why? (Feel free to make up one. We have had many weird ones in our day – grandma flavored was the worst.)

I can see how Grandma flavored would be confusing.  It could either be warm cookies and milk or mothballs.

I asked my husband his opinion, and he said Popcorn.  What is that supposed to mean?

Lets see…that is a tricky question. I would be busting to get out of the confinements of that little jelly belly body, and claustrophobic up against all those other jelly bellies.  And probably figuring out how I could be the best Jelly Belly I could be, so I would probably be something like Sun Burst.  Or…wait a minute…maybe that is Popcorn.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us and time out of your extra busy schedule. We wish you the best of luck and we will be looking forward to seeing what you come out with next.

Thank you.  I appreciate your interest and support.
Take Care and Happy Holidays,
Kristin

Lady Gaga should portray Winehouse in biography film?

Mitch, the late Amy Winehouse's father revealed that he would like American artist Lady Gaga to portray his daughter in a film about Amy's life.

"We were invited to Tony Bennett's birthday party and we sat on a table with Lady GaGa's mom and dad. They are just normal folk and very lovely people," he told Sunday Mirror in an interview.

"I have heard that Lady GaGa is keen to play Amy in a film. I don't know what her English accent is like but it's not just an English accent she would have to perfect - it's an English-Cockney-Jewish accent so she better start practising now! But she would be great."

Lady GaGa was reported to have visited Winehouse's London home to "pay respects to a musical hero". Lady Gaga later paid tribute to Winehouse on BBC Radio 1 when Back To Black was played in its entirety as part of Zane Lowe's 'Masterpieces 2011'.

Backstreet Cruise, Say What?

What's comes to your mind when you hear these words "Backstreet Boys Cruise"! Well to name a few they are awesome, crazy, for real, surreal, or no way! Well I can say I heard all those plus more.

This once in a life time experience (or twice if you went in 2010) will be a three day cruise to the Bahamas on Carnival Imagination. It's double or triple the price of what you normal would pay for a three day cruise like this but as fans would say, "it's so worth it"; especially since Kevin was returning for a day, which made fans go crazy. Fans from all over the world traveled to be part of this experience.

Each day was filled with things to do and all the fans were split into two groups. each day had events and each night had a theme. They were 80's, Prom, and PJ night. Some fans were lucky and got to be picked for the events. Five lucky fans got to be picked to be a queen for prom night and have their dance to "The Perfect Fan". In It To Win It, which is basically the version of Minute To Win it was a game of different things to do and fans got to be part of this and play games and some even got to go one and one with the guys. This cruise also included a beach party in the Bahamas which was beautiful and that's when Kevin decided to join with the rest of the guys and they all played some games on the beach, interacted with with fans, and even sang a acpeclla of Safest Place To Hide, and fans were able to be part of the games which would be every fan dream to be close to the guys as possible. The boys even did a meet and greet and took photo's with fans, but it had to be in groups of 8 but to do this for 3 hours and no break does tell you a lot about these guys... they do love their fans. The boys also did something huge for a fan who was to start doing chemo and her dream was to get her head shaved by the guys. Somehow the word got out there and they fulfilled that dream. After that it was time for some Karaoke. The Backstreet Boys sang songs with two fans at a time and it was all in fun... and thankfully it wasn't American Idol. Last but not least PJ night had to be the most exciting night of all since it all winded up rated R. The guys had to play truth and dare and even some lucky fans got to be part of this. It was definitely a night no one will forget.

As far as I can recall no fan have any regrets; everyone had a good time, many fans got to see the guys around the ship, get photo's and talk. I believe everyone walked off that ship proudly. Fans are already preparing for the next one, which is rumored to be in the summer of 2013. Hopefully we will see you there!

David Craig on co-star and new "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" clip

English actor Daniel Craig praised his "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo{ co-star Rooney Mara (granddaughter of Giants founder, Tim Mara.)

"There were shenanigans going on while she was being cast. David Fincher was adamant [about Mara] and I get that. Just look at the beginning of 'The Social Network,' she's phenomenal. She's got something about her, but also she's physically perfect. When she puts the hoodie on and the leather jacket, she looks like a 14-year-old boy, she looks sexless. Which is perfect. The other side of it is that when she doesn't have that on, she's really sexy. That combination is absolutely true to the book."

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is scheculed to be realeased in theaters on Dec. 21.

Here's EW's new clip from the much awaited film:

INTERVIEW: Aaron Carter Talks About The Fantasticks and New Music!

Recently our Program Manager, Kristin, did a virtual sit down with the talented Aaron Carter. We got the scoop on his role as Matt in the off Broadway production of The Fantastics, new music, and what it is about his fans that he loves so much.

You have been in the spotlight pretty much your entire life. Growing up a lot of people referred to you as Nick Carter’s little brother. As someone who has been “the younger sibling” to someone else, I know how that feels. I feel that you have definitely stepped out a lot this year and when you hear Aaron Carter we don’t think of your brother anymore. You think actor, singer, dancer, and performer. How does it feel to be at this point in your life?

It feels great to be able to be recognized for my own accomplishments. I have a great relationship with my brother and he's been able to help guide me in the right direction, but it's good that people are looking at me as my own person now. I like being able to stand on my own and have my talent speak for itself.

You are currently starring as Matt in The Fantasticks. How are you enjoying that role so far?

Starring in The Fantasticks has been a great experience.  I enjoy playing the role of Matt because he's's a hopeless romantic and a free spirit and I can really relate to his character.  Being able to study and rehearse with Tom Jones, the man who actually wrote and created the musical, has been humbling and a true honor.  He is an amazing individual.

We hear from the director that they do not typically hire on cast that is as large as you. How does it feel to know that you wowed them enough for them to break that mold

It feels amazing. It is an honor to be part of such a great cast and having my fans come out each night to see me. I am very thankful for this opportunity and I've really been bitten by the Broadway bug.  I hope to continue doing more in the future.

What can fans that are not familiar with The Fantasticks expect when they attend one of these shows?

When you come to see The Fantasticks you should expect to enjoy yourself from start to finish.  It is a musical about love with a few comedic twists in between.  I feel like The Fantasticks gives you a completely different “Broadway” experience.  We don’t have big special effects and gags, we are not on a huge elevated stage. Our show is very intimate and you will feel like you are part of the performance. I love being able to perform and have the audience right next to me. It's an incredible feeling.

Is theater something you are going to continue to pursue once this role is up?

Absolutely, I would love to do some more theater.  I feel like this experience and working with Tom Jones has brought me to a whole different level in both acting and singing.

Stepping away from The Fantasticks a bit, you are also a recording artists. It’s been a while since we have seen a new album from you. Is that in the works and when can we expect it?

Yes, in my down time from The Fantasticks, I have been writing and working on my music.  Listening to a bunch of submissions to see if any of the tracks are something I would like to record. I really want my new music to reflect who I am and what I've been through, so it's a little bit of a longer process. I want to give my fans something that I've put my all into and something they feel that they can relate to. Hopefully, I will have some new music out this year.

Seems it has been a while since you have released an album, how do you think your sound has changed over the years. You have obviously matured.

My sound has definitely matured over the years. I've gone through a lot more so I'm able to write about things that really are very personal to me whether it's relationships or life experiences. I also have been producing all of my own music so what you're listening to is completely coming from my heart and soul.

You sing, dance, act… is there anything you haven’t done that you are planning to try in the near future?

Right now, I've been really focusing on my role in The Fantasticks. That's definitely top priority for me and working on my music. I'd also really love to do some more acting. As far as anything I haven't done yet, I'm always looking forward to trying new things.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working, if there is such a time seems you are always so busy?

I love being outdoors, so anything associated with that I like to do in my downtime.  Since I've been living here in New York for the show, I've been able to explore a little bit and I love it. The energy in this city is amazing.

Your fans are clearly very important to you. We’ve seen you recently tweeting a lot of them back, following them back on twitter, etc. Why do you feel it’s important to be that interactive with them? Not all celebrities and performers do that.

Without fans you aren’t anything.  My fans are the greatest.  Which is why I feel it is so important to be interactive with them.   Social media has made that much easier.  I can now post something and my fans all over the world can see it in minutes.  Not only do I keep them informed of what is coming up or what I have been up to but I can also get instant feedback from them.  I also like to be able to connect with them on a personal level. With Twitter, they can always message me and I try my hardest to get back to each and every one of them. They mean the world to me and if just a hello or a simple follow from me will make their day, then I don't have any problem doing that. They deserve it.

What goes through your mind when you get those messages that you just made their year, or that they love you? A simple three or four word tweet from you literally makes their day to the point of happy tears.

I Love it!!  As I said earlier, my fans are the greatest and their constant support over the years has been absolutely amazing.  I want them to always know how much I appreciate and love them and I'm there for them whenever they need me. I wouldn't be where I am without them.

What else should the fans be on the lookout for from you over the next year or so?

Well, I'll be in The Fantasticks until the end of January, then I definitely want to keep pursuing acting and theater as well as working on my music. Hopefully within the year I will be getting some new material out for everyone to hear.

Our last question we are well known for. We ask all of our guests this. It’s a bit fun and random. Here it goes: If you could be any flavor jelly belly (jelly bean), what flavor would you be and why? Feel free to make one up if it doesn’t exist.

Haha, hmm… I'd probably be one of those weird flavors that every one is afraid to eat so they have to work up the courage to do it. Like the Harry Potter flavors… Definitely.
