American Horror Story: Asylum EW Cover Preview
http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/08/29/this-weeks-cover-american-horror-story-asylum/ |
Lisa (lisa@artistsondemandonline.com) and I were casually texting back and forth about our topics for TV Tuesdays, which is starting next week on Artists on Demand. I said, "I don't watch a lot of TV." She said, "I watch a lot of TV." We tried to compare what we did watch and the last thing she said to me was, "I don't watch anything horror."
I completely understand that because I have a very paradoxical relationship with the genre. Horror scares me, but I love horror. Hence the paradox. Okay, I realized that it's supposed to scare me, but it really scares me. I like being scared. There is nothing worse than something that's supposed to be frightening and it ends up being sad and funny.
All that being said, I am looking forward to a few shows this fall. The Walking Dead and American Horror Story. Season one of AMHS titillated me (Dylan McDermott, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto, anyone?) confused me, and frightened me.
This cover is from this weeks Entertainment Weekly and I may never be able to look at Jessica Lange in the same way again!
What you saw in the [season one] finale was the end of the Harmon house. The second season of the show will be a brand-new home or building to haunt. Just like this year, every season of this show will have a beginning, middle and end. [The second season] won't be in L.A. It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale."

Get your braaaains....Walking Dead Food Truck
If you are walking the streets of London - alive or dead - you can now get a brain burger. This new food truck has some specialty offerings to celebrate the DVD Release of The Walking Dead Season 2.
Masterminded by Street Kitchen chef Mark Jankel, The Gory Gourmet serves up dishes for "zombies on the go," including The Big Brain Burger made of English calf brains, Feet and Thyroid Nuggets (pig's feet and cow thyroid with herb mayo) and Skewered Hearts (grilled beef heart skewers with horseradish mayo). Perfect for post-apocalyptic foodies. Just the thought of most of those noshes makes this breather want to go Vegan.
Hmm, I always heard that zombies hated fast food.
GOP Convention Entertainment - What does it mean?
When I heard this morning that the headline entertainment for the Republican National Convention was The Oak Ridge Boys, it made me wonder if you could tell anything about a political party by who they book as entertainment. The following is just who they have scheduled as entertainment. As you would expect, they also, are hosting some very distinguished speakers.

The rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd had been scheduled Sunday to launch a series of concerts there that included Trace Adkins on Tuesday and Kid Rock on Wednesday. Organizers shut down all of Liberty Plaza on Sunday when it was decided Lynyrd Skynyrd wouldn't perform due to the weather. Lynyrd Skynyrd was also supposed to be part of the official convention proceedings on Monday.
It's not exactly what I was expecting and I don't think there really is enough data to draw a conclusion. What do you think?

R.I.P Neil Armstrong
The world mourns the loss of a historic figure. Neil Armstrong, born in 1930, passed away on August 25th, 2012 due to "complications from cardiovascular procedures" according to his family's statement. Armstrong made history when he became the first man to step foot on the moon. His line "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." will forever be remembered.
Nasa administrator Charles Bolden released an official statement saying:
"On behalf of the entire NASA family, I would like to express my deepest condolences to Carol and the rest of the Armstrong family on the passing of Neil Armstrong. As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own.
"Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation.
"As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero."

Kanye West a Possible American Idol Judge?
File Under: This could be very interesting.
Kanye is on a list of possible American Idol judges for season twelve. Reportedly he is on the fence because he's not sure Idol is his type of venue. Sources say that money could sweeten the deal and that Idol would match the 18 million they gave Mariah Carey.
Other rumored judges - Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Alanis Morrisette, Joe Jonas and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Are you planning to watch season twelve? Who do you think would make a good judge?

"The Office" Ends after Season Nine
The end of The Office means a big turning point for NBC as it looks to revamp its lineup. The network is betting on freshman comedies, picking up seven to series and giving condensed orders for returning half-hours including Community and 30 Rock, the latter of which also will wrap after this season.
So will we see a return for Michael Scott?
"We'll see," Daniels said of the idea to bring the actor back to the series that helped launch his career. "We have ideas for the ending, and obviously if he would participate, we would have a lot of good times. The idea will fly without him if he can't make it. He is pretty busy."

The Hunger Games tops Harry Potter as Amazon's Best Selling Series
The Hunger Games franchise has squashed the record set by the Harry Potter series to become Amazon.com's best-selling series in the online retailer's history, the company announced on Friday.
Sara Nelson, the editorial director of books and Kindle at Amazon, told reporters, "Since debuting in 2008, Katniss Everdeen and the Hunger Games have taken the world by storm, much as Harry Potter did a decade before."
Sara Nelson, the editorial director of books and Kindle at Amazon, told reporters, "Since debuting in 2008, Katniss Everdeen and the Hunger Games have taken the world by storm, much as Harry Potter did a decade before."
The slightly more grown up theme to the book can perhaps be one of the reasons toward the franchise's success, giving it a broader readership to surpass the number of readers that JK Rowling's series reached. Author Suzanne Collins has yet to announce plans for a follow-up novel to 2010's Mockingjay, although is believed to have no desire to drawing out the trilogy any further.

Rest in Peace Tony Scott
Tony Scott on the set of Pelham One Two Three |
Tony Scott took his own life Sunday by jumping off a bridge in California. Mr. Scott was an incredibly influential director and the brother of Ridley Scott. He was 68 years old.
He directed films such as The Hunger, Top Gun, True Romance (which was written by Quentin Tarintino) and Crimson Tide among many others.
"Starting with 'The Hunger' (1984), his films center on obsessive relationships whose blind pursuit threatens the order of things, and usually has terrible consequences for those unlucky enough to be around. The nature of the relationship is variable: Heterosexual romance as in 'True Romance' (1993) works just as well as the homoerotic buddy-bonding of 'The Last Boy Scout' or 'Spy Game''s father-son-constellation. The most extreme case -- and the film with which Tony’s filmography starts getting interesting -- is 'Crimson Tide,' where the relationship between a nuclear sub’s captain (Gene Hackman) and his first officer (Washington) is framed in the most general terms (they obsess over whose view of reality is correct), the system of order is the most rigid (military protocol), and the consequences are the most momentous (Armageddon)." Quoted from "World Out of Order: Tony Scott's 'Vertigo'"
Our hearts go out to his family. Rest in Peace, Mr. Scott.
Some celebrity quotes from Twitter.
"Tony Scott... You left us too soon. How terribly sad. What a lovely, kind human being you were. I will love and miss you much. Blessings to your family. Rest In Peace."
"Tony Scott, rest in peace. How horribly sad."
"Such sad news about Tony Scott. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
"No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."
"Taking a moment to reflect on Tony Scott's life and work! My sympathies to his family. Feeling the loss!"
"'I make a movie because it's something that inspires me' ~ Tony Scott 6/21/44 - 8/19/12 Your movies inspired me."
"RIP Tony. You were the kindest film director I ever worked for. You will be missed."
"So sad to hear about Tony Scott. A master of grand action, nail biting pace and atmosphere. A real loss to film making."
"Tony Scott director of my favorite movie 'Man on Fire.' 'I wish you had more time'"
"A guy like Tony was a trendsetter, unlike most chart following sheep directors in the big budget action film world. You'll be missed :( RIP."
"RIP Tony Scott. Never knew him but always heard nothing but great things about him and I loved his films. Terrible loss for cinema."
"So sad to hear the news about Tony Scott. His movies made growing up more fun for me. My prayers and condolences to the Scott family."
"Awful news about Tony Scott. Rest in peace."

Charlaine Harris visits Australia
The creator of some of our favorite vampires, werefolk and crazy humans, Charlaine Harris, has been on a whirlwind tour of Australia recently and I was lucky enough to sit in on one of her Q&A sessions in Brisbane.
She told us about how she had a fangirl moment when Anne Rice messaged her on Facebook and how her kids are going to be in Season 5 - she has previously had a teeny extra part too. Her Harper Connelly books are finished, but have been optioned for a tv show - twice. She started writing conventional mysteries and has had mild success, but wanted to try something different and went down the supernatural route.
Questions included:
Does she have any say in the cast of True Blood? She has zero say in anything to do with the show, but she does enjoy some of the things they have done, including not killing of Lafayette. She's very grateful for what the show has done for her book sales and she respects the writers. She does watch the show.
Does she have an opinion on fan fiction? She said she doesn't really like to read it because she can't really think of her characters any other way, but she's glad it makes other people happy. The thought of Bill and Eric being intimate is not for her.
Will she be sad to be leaving Sookie's universe? she thinks that story has finished and heart just isn't in it anymore, but she's very happy about her new work.
Is she working on anything new, seeing as she's told everyone the next Southern Vampire Mystery novel will be her last? Yes, she has a new series coming out that she hopes everyone is excited for and will read.
Has she ever doubted her ability to be a good writer? Being a writer is a compulsion and she's not really good at anything else. It took 2 years for the first Southern Vampire Mystery book to be picked up as most publishers had no idea what genre to publish it in, but it was an instant success.
How difficult was it to write about a post Hurricane Katrina New Orleans? It was hard as it was the first thing to solidify the time that the Southern Vampire Mystery books were set, but she felt that she couldn't leave it out.
Does she use real life friends as inspiration for characters? She joked not to cross her...but she would never use a whole person's characteristics.
When writing, does she plan her stories ahead and what has she learned from writing the Southern Vampire Mysteries? No she doesn't plan, but she might try and do that now. A continuity proof reader was hired part way into the Southern Vampire Mysteries and fans are very quick to point out mistakes in that area. Also, she wrote herself into some corners she would have preferred not to, so planning is definitely something she'll look into.
How does she schedule her day? Approximately 7hours are put aside for writing, but she has many appearances, tours, lectures and paperwork to do. Her team keep her on track.
Did she regret anything she's written in the Southern Vampire Mysteries? Yes, killing off Claudine. Killing off way too many characters.
What is the basis of her fairy mythology? Primarily Irish, but she made a lot of it up.
What vampire mythology did she use and/or ignore? The Southern Vampire Mystery vampires were made up to fill a niche in her books. She ignored the religious aspect 'What relevance would a cross have on someone like Eric?' and she said she deliberately doesn't reference her vampires having or not having a soul.
Of all the leading men in the Southern Vampire Mysteries / True Blood, who is her favorite...Alcide? She definitely likes to look at Joe, but she likes them all as characters as they all have good and bad aspects.
Her lovely sister was chatting with us whilst we were waiting - I was there for over 1.5hours - and she was scared about all of the photos that were being taken that she was probably going to be in.
If you have any questions you wish to ask me about the night, contact me @JadeAODradio on twitter.

Michael J. Fox Comming Back to Prime-Time TV?
Though, it could be much ado about nothing.
"There's a tremendous amount of interest," a source familiar with the pitch tells us. "The show is likely to land on a broadcast network, and they're all very interested right now."
Just a few details are available, and Sony is staying awfully quiet just the beyond confirmation, but the source did say that the show is a comedy. According to Vulture, the show will be inspired by the actor's life and directed by Will Gluck ("Easy A"), and writer Sam Laybourne ("Cougar Town," "Arrested Development") is attached.
