Today was the nationwide release of Tarsem Singh's "Immortals" starring Henry Cavill ("The Tudors," "Man of Steel.") I have always admired Singh since I first saw his film "The Cell" with Jennifer Lopez and Vincent D'Onofrio years ago and loved him even more when "The Fall" came out (starring Lee Pace and Catinca Untaru) so this review might be a bit on the biased side. However, I am confident enough to say that "Immortals" will never disappoint. Visually it is as rich as other Singh's movies. The battle scenes were epic and although Theseus' war speech wasn't anything like William Wallace's, it still did the trick.
The acting for the most part was very well done. Cavill, in my opinion, did an excellent good job portraying his character, the mortal Theseus, who was touched by the Gods, without over-doing it. Cavill brought the right amount of emotion to his scenes that you symphatized with his character.
Frieda Pinto who portrayed the virgin oracle on the other hand would've given more, in my opinion. There were scenes when I felt she was holding back e.g. waking up from a dream of King Hyperion freeing the Titans.
Luke Evans who portrayed Zeus was great as well. I thoroughly enjoyed his scenes especially the ones when he was descending from Olympus to earth.
My favorite part of the film, I have to say would be the battle scenes. This is when Singh's visionary genuis emerged. We've seen a lot of war/battle scenes in films but "Immortals" brought something different, something new especially when the three battle scenes - Theseus/Hyperion, Gods/Titans, Mortals/Cretes - were alternately shown. I particulary enjoyed Theseus and Hyperion's fight scene- there was something very raw with the choreography that made it look as real as it could get and it was definitely intense and full of emotions.
Over all, two big thumbs up for "Immortals." Go see it! You will not be disappointed!
