On Thursday, November 10, 2011, Derek Nicoletto played a brilliant Birthday show at On The Rocks, the exclusive room that sits above the Roxy in Hollywood, CA.
I caught the show and it was a good turnout. The energetic crowd of friends and regulars danced around, and despite attempts to be upstaged by his audience, Derek gave a strong show.
His alternative sound ran the gamut from ballads that carried the spirit of Prince, with engaging guitar riffs and the hauntingly melodic piano accompaniment, to outright rock anthems in which Derek proclaimed his love for rock-n-roll. Derek himself is an engergetic and intense showman who can keep your attention both parading and prowling across the stage and with his own dance style. His vocals vary like his music, profound sometimes, and genial on other songs.
Derek had a strong pair backing him on drums and guitar and the show was overall fantastic.
Anyone able to catch Derek onstage, should. I'd recommend him, because there just aren't enough consummate performers in Alternative Rock these days, who don't rely on gimmick. Derek's music is straightforward and true, and every song speaks to within.
Happy Birthday, Derek, and thank you for a fabulous show.
