American Director Sidney Lemut Dies at 86

American director Sidney Lumet died at 86 in his New York City house on Saturday.

Lumet was the man behind 12 Angry Men (1957), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and The Verdict (1982), all of which earned Lumet an Academy Award nomination of Best Director.

Lumet worked with some of his era's greatest movie performers like Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Katharine Hepburn, and Al Pacino to name a few.

In 2005, Lumet was awarded an Honorary Oscar for his “brilliant services to screenwriters, performers and the art of motion pictures.”


Lumet was born in Philadelphia on June 25th, 1924 and grew up in New York City. Lumet's death was caused by lymphoma according to his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel who spoke with New York Times.

Lumet's last film was the blended crime-thriller Before the Devid Knows You're Dead in 2007 which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke.
