Sean Berdy Interview (Spoiler Alert)

You play Emmett on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth? What does it feel like to know you are playing a role that everyone seems to love, but also one that is constantly teaching the viewers about the Deaf Community?

I would smile every time when I was told that I have become known as a character that everyone seems to love. It is a nice compliment and remarks that the fans said. Portraying Emmett is something incredible for me to give out my authentic entertainment for the viewers.

What do you love about playing Emmett?

I love everything about Emmett. He's such a bad guy with so much heart on the side. The similarities between my character, Emmett, in Switched at Birth and myself are solely full deaf and use American Sign Language. We have the same interest in photography. The difference is Emmett is a deaf James Dean type and speak for himself bluntly in any type of situation. He doesn't really care and tends to make up his own mind. I am completely opposite to the character I portrayed. I'm just a guy who has so much love and care for everyone.

You’re character and Vanessa Marano’s character, Bay, have struck up this new relationship. What can fans expect from that relationship in the remainder of the episodes?

Our relationship is definitely was an unexpected, charming development that the audience will view differently on the other way around. Emmett has found interest into Bay and is madly in love with her. They combined together so well and is eager to up-beat the relationship in every way. It's a new experience for Bay/Emmett and they eventually will build up strongly.

Your character started off as a small role and has built over time. Will the fans continue to see that character growth?

Absolutely, the fans will see a lot of more Emmett in every episode which is  exciting news!

How was the audition process for you in order to get the role of Emmett?

I know the producers were looking for a deaf James Dean and I sure felt I deserve the moniker as a character's title. I even analyze him on YouTube and read numerous of articles and stories. From time to time, I went into the audition room and the producers are eager to see my work. Then, a couple of weeks later I got a call from them saying that they're interested in me, It's tremendously fun to evaluate myself to have some James Dean alike on the show.

How does it make you feel when you hear of fans learning sign language and sending you videos of them with messages for you?

Yes, I received tons of videos from the fans and I surely felt great. It is such a great honor and they deserve much love and respect from me.

You are a very artistic person. We know you act and dance. What other artistic outlets do you enjoy?

I have so many interests besides acting that keeps my mind running. I love having fun and laughing as much as I can. I love to bring my jokes, stories and explain to bunch of families and friends. I love to entertain people in every way I could do. Dancing is one of my other favorite things to do as I would dance around the house consistently with a big loud sound system which contains speakers and a subwoofer. The whole house is shaking and some things may fall! When I'm in town to visit my family, I always dance right in front of television blocking my mom to watch, and yet she enjoys. Also, I love photography and modeling. To capture an amazing still picture is fascinating and been doing it for a passion. I also do graphic design with my Adobe CS5 premium and been doing it since when I was a young boy. And, I do make film projects independently and with friends and have them edited in Final Cut Pro. There are more including paintball, golf, cooking.

You are always tweeting about how you are blasting music at your house. What is it about music that you love so much?

I love Michael Jackson and any Pop genre music. I do really hear them with my hearing aid. Music never cease to make me tired.

Are you working on any other projects currently while you are off from filming Switched at Birth??

Today, I am developing my new superlative one man show called "The Sean Berdy Show" that will bring my comedy standup, life stories, storytelling, skits and performance to life. The show is entirely used in American Sign Language. I would be performing for deaf audiences and eventually, hearing audiences too. The show is something that the audience will never see like this before. It is all contributed to the fans and I believe they deserve to be entertained in every way in real life. That is why I'm creating this magnificent show and I'm really extremely excited to have it shown. Also, I will be shooting an ASL music version of Hero by Enrique Iglesias. Should be coming out in the fall.

A Big Thank you to Sean Berdy for taking the time to talk to us!
