An old film by the legandary Alfred Hitchcock was resently discovered in New Zealand.The film titled The White Shadow, dated 1920's provides clues into Hitchcock's early style. The film features Hitchcock who was then 24 years old- as the writer, assistant director, art director, and editor.
According to the National Film Preservation, a U.S. based foundation, that the newly discovered film is the earliest surviving project in which Hitchcock received a credit.
The White Shadow had six reels but only three survived. The film was directed by British director Graham Cutts, featuring Betty Compson, a big star in the 1920s. The film is a melodrama about twin sisters who were both played by Compson- one twin was angelic and the other, devilish.
The three surviving reels of The White Shadow will be shown by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at its Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on September 22nd. The film was originally released in 1924.
