R.E.M. is no more

American rock band R.E.M. disbanded on Wednesday after 30 years of good songs and memorable tours.

The band formed which formed in Athens, Georgia back in 1980 was founded by singer Michael Stipe, Peter Buck (guitarist), Mike Mills (bassist), and drummer Bill Berry. The band released 15 studio albums between 1983 with Murmur as their first and 2011, Collapse into Now as thei band's last album. Aside from the studio albums, R.E.M. also released nine compilation albums, one EP, and 64 singles.

In 1997, drummer Bill Berry left the band due to health issues and the remaining members continued on without him.

Here is the band's last words for their fans who supported them for over 30 years:

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening. A wise man once said–’the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave.’ We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it. I hope our fans realize this wasn’t an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way. We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It’s been amazing."

R.E.M. popularized hits such as "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "The One I Love."
