British painter Lucian Freud passed away at age 88.
Freud, who is the German-born grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud was known for his "intense realist depictions" particularly of nude women.
Among the famous people Freud had painted was The Queen, Kate Moss when she was pregnant and The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger's ex, Jerry Hall.
Freud's New York-based dealer held a tribute last night and called the artist "one of the great painters of the twentieth century."
"He lived to paint and painted until the day he died, far removed from the noise of the art world. His early paintings redefined British art," art dealer William Acquavella said.
