Fans of the group were shocked to learn that Aimi Eguchi, the newest member of the AKB48 group does not exist but a digital creation based on the features of the six other members of the group instead.
It was reported that fans have had suspicions that Eguchi was not real as she perfectly resembled the other girls in the group. This suspicion was comfirmed this week when the group's management released a video of Eguchi being created.
Aimi Eguchi was created to promote Glico's (confectionary maker in Japan) Ice no Mi (a bite sized round candy.) Glico has now published a tool in their websites where AKB48 fans are allowed to created their own AKB48 girls and share them on other social networking sites.
The AKB48 group is based in Akibahara, Tokyo and holds the Guinness record for being the world's largest pop group for having 58 members.
