$23 Million Raised During Hurricane Sandy Benefit
On Saturday, it was announced by NBC Universal and the American Red Cross that Friday night's benefit raised a massive $23 million for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Some of the biggest names in music and television pulled together after the superstorm caused damages that amount to billions of dollars and took over 100 lives.
Peggy Dyer, the Chief Marketing Officer of the Red Cross said in a statement that they are incredibly grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support. "Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster," she said.
Music heavyweights like Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Steven Tyler, Mary J. Blige and Billy Joel all lent their talents to the telethon while celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Kevin Bacon and Jon Stewart all provided their support.
While Dyer also noted that the proceeds will go directly to those in need, she has also urged to public to continue to donate.
