DC goes digital. Is that better?
Getting the issue of your favorite DC comic, just got a lot easier. DC announced yesterday that their entire catalog is now available in e-book format for all the major readers and tablets.
What this takes out of the social aspect of running out to the comic store and purchasing your favorites, it certainly makes up for in convenience. The digital versions of the physical issues will be downloadable on the same day that the hardcopy versions hit store shelves. Prices will range from 99 cents to $4.99. Plus, the artwork does look nice on tablets.
Jim Lee, head of DC’s Entertainment co-publishing said: "As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it's important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and graphic novels and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that.
“We're very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores.
What will AMC's Comic Book Men think? The digital version is not something that you can practically keep around for posterity or collectiblity, for that matter. Though, if you were a hardcore collector you could purchase the printed version to keep in pristine condition, while you use your digital version to read.
Casual fans will enjoy the convenience of immediate download. This is another "Book vs.e-book" type debate. I still swing back and forth on my opinions about it. What do you think? To print or not to print, that is the question.
