Malajube: Discovering a Revelation

When you discover something that proved to be remarkable later on, you will have the urge to share it with others. And when given the opportunity to do so, you grab it. This is one of those pieces; an article that will take you to a second-hand book store where they have bad lighting, an old uncomfortable couch and in the corner, a small box of pre-owned CDs where the center of the topic was discovered.

CD title: "Trompe-l'oeil"
Artist: Malajube
Last owner's note on CD cover: "Great but all songs in French!"

Passed the language difference, true talent emerges; vocal harmony partnered with clean guitar rhythm, that nice beat of the drum and keyboard together with amazing composition and arrangements, Malajube's music speaks not just to francophones but to non-french speaking music lovers as well.

After a few times of listening to their hit "Pate Filo" (a single once used for a "Radio Shack" commercial in the US and from album Trompe-l'œil), you will find yourself disregarding the lyrics and just feeling the music, but it wouldn't hurt to know the lyrics to their songs. They are catchy, different and very well thought out of-

"Pour contrôler mon impudicité,
j'ai couvert mon coeur d'une pâte filo
qui me protège de toi et de ta libido"

(To control my immodesty,

I covered my heart with a filo pastry

that protects me from you and your libido)

To those who don't know this brilliant band--Malajube is an indie rock band based in Montreal and Quebec. They have produced 3 albums under Dare to Care Records: Le Compte complet (2004), Trompe-l'œil (2006) and Labyrinthes (2009). Their fourth album entitled La Caverne will be released on April 19th, 2011.

Malajube
was praised not only for their remarkable talent as musicians but also for doing it and making it without compromising their root. It was said that Malajube "was one of the few Quebec musical groups who was able to gain success in the English Canada despite not performing in English" and it was something the band said they are not interested in doing.

Malajube won three Félix Awards at the 28th edition of the Gala de l'ADISQ back in 2006. Two awards was for their album Trompe-l'œil, "Best alternative album" and "Best cover art" and they were also proclaimed "Revelation of the year 2006."

Malajube played at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. In the same year, Malajube also composed and played the soundtrack for the indie film "The Trotsky" starring "How to Train Your Dragon"'s Jay Baruchel.

In the following weeks, Malajube will be playing in Texas (USA), Quebec and Ontario.
